Researcher Bio
Abdulbaki (Baki) Agbas, MSc, Ph.D., became a KCUMB faculty member in early 2010 after working as a Research Assistant Professor at the Higuchi Biosciences Center and a faculty member of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.

He earned a master of science in clinical biochemistry in 1985 at Ataturk University in Erzurum, Turkey. He completed his doctor of philosophy in biochemistry at the University of Szeged in Hungary, and a university docent in medical biochemistry with The Council of Higher Education in Turkey.

Dr. Agbas' research interests include molecular biology of aging and aging related neurodegenerative diseases. He has published research on key proteins in the central nervous system that undergo oxidative modifications during brain aging. He recently studied Calcineurin and Cu/Zn Superoxide dismutase interactions in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease. Currently, he is studying the physiological and biochemical changes in mitochondria in a transgenic mouse model that endogenously expresses excessive glutamate. He is also studying Zinc homeostasis in mitochondria of ALS model mice and may be extending his studies to zebra fish as a proposed animal model for ALS related studies.

Dr. Agbas' career highlights include being designated a fellow for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to study modern concepts in biology at the Biological Research Center in Szeged, Hungary, and discovering a novel mRNA binding protein in neuronal cell.
